Office of Communications (OFCOM)

a statutory body regulating the communications sector. A Board provides strategic direction for OFCOM and it is run with a non-executive chairman, five non-executive directors and three executive directors including the chief executive officer. It is charged with ensuring the optimal use of the electromagnetic spectrum; that a wide range of electronic communications services - including high speed data services - is available throughout the UK; transmission of wide range of TV and radio services of high quality and wide appeal; maintaining plurality in the provision of broadcasting; and applying adequate protection for audiences against offensive or harmful material or unfairness or the infringement of privacy.
