Nedic, Milan

Born Aug. 20, 1877, in Grocka; died Feb. 4, 1946, in Belgrade. Military and state figure in Yugoslavia; general of the army.

Nedic was commander of a regiment and a brigade of the Serbian Army in World War I (1914–18). He was chief of Main Headquarters and war minister from the late 1930’s to the early 1940’s. He supported the fascist organization Zbor, which conducted Hitlerite propaganda among officers. After the capitulation of the Yugoslav Army (April 1941), Nedic became the head (Aug. 29, 1941) of the Serbian puppet government set up by the fascist German occupation forces. Between 1941 and 1944 the military units of the Nedic government fought together with the fascist occupation forces against the antifascist people’s liberation movement. When Belgrade was liberated from the fascist occupation forces in October 1944, Nedic fled but was later arrested. He committed suicide while under investigation.
