microfibrillar fibres

microfibrillar fibres

A group of discrete pleomorphic fibres, largely consisting of fibrillin, which is more widely distributed than elastin.
Ultrastructure
MFFs are linear bundles containing many microfibrils (10–12-nm-diameter tubular threads), forming long rods, sheets and meshwork, serving as scaffolding for elastin; they are found in the mature tunica media of the aorta and other blood vessels, dermal-epidermal interface of the reticular dermis, ciliary zonules of the ocular lens, dura mater, cartilage, kidney, muscle, perichondrium, periosteum, pleura, skin and tendon.
