  1. (genetics) (also called restrictive conditions) conditions under which an ORGANISM or CELL expresses a conditional MUTATION (see CONDITIONAL MUTANT and displays the MUTANT PHENOTYPE. For a CONDITIONAL LETHAL mutation, nonpermissive conditions will be lethal, causing death of the MUTANT.
  2. (virology) conditions in which VIRUS INFECTION and MULTIPLICATION do not occur in a cell.
