microintroducer

(mī″krō-ĭn″trō-doos′ĕr, -dūs′) The needle and sheath through which a guidewire and peripherally inserted central catheter are placed. Use of this instrument decreases the risk of vessel puncture and allows the person doing the procedure to use a smaller needle to access the vein and then enlarge the opening with a dilator.
