McMillan, Edwin (Mattison)

(1907–91) physicist; born in Redondo Beach, Calif. Working at the University of California: Berkeley, primarily at their Lawrence Radiation Laboratory (1934–73), he and Glenn Seaborg discovered plutonium (1941) and other transuranium elements. McMillan improved the design of the cyclotron (1945) and built the first synchrotron. He shared the Nobel Prize in chemistry with Seaborg (1951).
