A minimally invasive technique for managing benign prostatic hypertrophy.
Method
Radiofrequency (RF) needles are passed through the urethra and into the lateral lobes of the prostate, heated to 110°C at an RF power of 456 kHz for approximately 3 minutes per lesion, resulting in causing heat-induced coagulation necrosis; the tissue is later absorbed by phagocytosis.
Pros
Office procedure, no need for general anaesthesia, rapid recovery, minimal side effects, one-time procedure.
Cons
No tissue for pathology, not good for large (> 75g) prostates
