LocustellaLocustella(grasshopper warblers), a genus of birds of the family Sylviidae of the order Passeriformes. The body length is 12–16 cm. The plumage is brownish or olive, sometimes with bright markings on the abdomen and back. There are seven species: L. naevia, L. lanceolata, L. flaviatilis, L. certhiola, L.fas-ciolata, L. ochotensis, and L. luscinioides. Grasshopper warblers are distributed in Europe, Asia (except the south), and northwest Africa. All species are found in the USSR. The birds winter in Africa and South Asia. They inhabit tall grasses, especially in damp places, and shrubbery along forest edges. The nests are built on the ground or very low in bushes. There are four to six white or pink speckled eggs in a clutch. The birds feed on insects and spiders. The song of some grasshopper warblers resembles the shrill creaking noise of crickets and grasshoppers. |
