New NHS: Modern, dependable

A 1997 UK Department of Health White Paper which delineated how the internal market (for healthcare services in the UK) would be replaced by a system called “integrated care”, based on partnership and driven by performance. The New NHS formed the basis for a ten-year programme to renew and improve the NHS by evolutionary change rather than organisational upheaval, building on what worked and discarding what failed. The needs of patients would be central to the new system.
