a river in Magadan Oblast, RSFSR, and the Yakut ASSR; a right tributary of the Kolyma River. Length, 1,114 km; drains an area of 113,000 sq km. Rises in the Otaikachan Range (Kolyma Highland) and flows in a narrow mountain valley. Below the Kegal’, a right tributary, the valley broadens, and the river becomes branched. The river is fed by snow and rain. It freezes in October and thaws in late May or early June. It freezes over on its upper course; extremely large accumulations of Aufeis are formed. Polynyas stretch for dozens and even hundreds of kilometers down the river. The main tributaries are the Mo-longda, Oloi, and Oloichan on the right and the Kedon on the left. Timber is rafted on the lower course. The Omolon is navigable from the Shcherbakovo landing (600 km).
