mobile website

mobile website

A website designed for the small screens of smartphones. Queries to a website include the type of browser being used, and when a request from a mobile browser is made, the site redirects it to its mobile counterpart (if there is one) for a more convenient surfing experience. Once bookmarked, users can access the site by its own name such as mobile.pcmag.com. Mobile sites render their pages in narrow columns and often provide only a subset of their regular website. Contrast with native mobile app. See mobile Web browser, responsive Web design and mobile version.

Desktop vs. Mobile
Desktop browsers have much more room for multiple columns and wider content (top), but mobile browsers do not. A responsive Web design detects the device and returns a single column for mobile users (bottom).
