On the central northern border of WA; organized Feb 2, 1888 (prior to statehood) from Stevens County. Name Origin: For the Okanogan River, which traverses the county. From a Salish Indian name possibly meaning 'meeting place [of water]' for the confluence of the Okanogan and Columbia rivers, or 'rendezvous' because they met here for their potlaches
