Mrevlishvili, Aleksandr Romanovich

Born Aug. 3 (15), 1866, in Mtskheta; died Dec. 25, 1933, in Tbilisi. Georgian painter; representative of the realistic democratic school of national art at the turn of the 20th century.

Mrevlishvili studied in Moscow at the School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture from 1884 to 1890 and in Paris at the Académie Julien from 1898 to 1901. He was influenced by the peredvizhniki (the “wanderers”—a progressive art movement). Mrevlishvili’s works deal primarily with the hardships of the peasantry in prerevolutionary Georgia. His works include the paintings At the Village Chancellery (1899), The Low Fence (1901), and Tax Collection (1900’s), as well as the drawing A Peasant’s Life (1905). These works are in the Art Museum of the Georgian SSR in Tbilisi.
