a genus of lizards of the family Scincidae. The body is elongated (up to 20 cm long) and snakelike. There are six species, found in Greece, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and northwestern India. Four species have short extremities with four to two toes, and two have no limbs. The immobile lower eyelid has a transparent oval disk. It is possible that the lizard Ophiomorus brevipes is found in the USSR: a specimen was caught on the Turkmenia-Iran border. The lizards live under rocks, in soil crevices, or in sand; they rarely surface.
