Mukhammed’yar, Makhmud Hadji Ugly

 

Date of birth and death unknown. Sixteenth-century Tatar poet.

Mukhammed’yar’s narrative poems The Men’s Gift (1539–40) and The Light of Hearts (1542) were a landmark in Tatar literature. He advocated sympathy and love for the common people and demanded justice from the rulers. Mukhammed’yar made extensive use of the devices of Tatar oral poetry as he continued the Oriental poetic tradition of the moralizing parable.
