Orlov, Vladimir Nikolaevich

Born June 22 (July 5), 1908, in Valdai, present-day Novgorod Oblast. Soviet literary scholar.

Orlov graduated from the division of literature of the Leningrad Institute for the History of Arts (1929). From 1941 to 1945 he was a war correspondent for the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS). From 1956 to 1970 he was editor in chief of the series Biblioteka poeta (Poet’s Library).

Orlov began to publish in 1927. His works deal mainly with the revolutionary and democratic trends in Russian literature in the late 18th and early 19th centuries (Russian Enlightenment Figures From 1790 to the 1800’s, 1950; State Prize of the USSR, 1951; 2nd ed., 1953) and with such writers as A. N. Radishchev and A. S. Griboedov. Orlov is also concerned with the history and theory of late 19th- and early 20th-century Russian literature. His works on Blok, including Aleksandr Blok: Essay on His Work (1956), are of great importance.

Orlov was the editor of The Diary of W. K. Küchelbecker (1929) and the anthologies The Radishchev Poets (1935, 1952, 1961) and The Decembrists: Poetry, Drama, Prose, Publicistic Writings, Literary Criticism (1951). He has also written monographs on M. Tsvetaeva (published in M. Tsvetaeva: Selected Works, 1965).
