Makovel’skii, Aleksandr Osipovich

 

Born July 10 (22), 1884, in Grodno; died Dec. 16, 1969, in Baku. Soviet philosopher. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946).

Makovel’skii graduated from the University of Kazan. He was a decent (from 1912) and a professor (from 1918) at the University of Kazan, and from 1920 to 1960 he was a professor at the University and other educational institutions in Baku. He was the director (1945-50) and senior scientific associate (from 1950) of the Institute of Philosophy and Law of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR. His major works are devoted to the history of ancient philosophy, the history of philosophy of peoples of the Middle East, dialectical materialism, logic, and psychology. Numerous works of the ancient Greek philosophers have been published in translations by Makovel’skii, with his commentaries.
