Tuohy needle


Tuo·hy nee·dle

(tū'hē), a needle with a lateral opening at the distal end, designed to cause a catheter passing through the needle's lumen to exit laterally at a 45-degree angle; used for placing catheters into the subarachnoid or epidural space.

(too′ē) [Edward B. Tuohy, U.S. anesthesiologist, 1908–1959] A needle with a curved point that is used in epidural anesthesia. The curve reduces the possibility that the point of the needle and the anesthetic will enter the dura mater.
