see TupeloTupelo, city (1990 pop. 30,685), seat of Lee co., NE Miss.; founded 1859, inc. 1870. It is the trade, processing, and shipping center for a cotton, grain, dairying, and livestock area. Once important for timber, the city is named after the tupelo, or black gum, tree.

Established: Established as a national battlefield site on February 21, 1929;transferred from the War Department on August 10, 1933; changed tonational battlefield on August 10, 1961. Administered by the NatchezTrace Parkway.
Location:Within the city limits of Tupelo, Mississippi, between US 45 and the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Facilities:Museum/exhibit.
Special Features:Here, on July 13-14, 1864, Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest tried to cut the railroad supplying the Union's March on Atlanta.
