Turan
(to͞orän`), desert lowland, shared by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, S and E of the Aral Sea. The Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers divide it into the Kara KumKara Kum, two deserts, one in Kazakhstan and one in Turkmenistan. The Caspian Kara Kum or Garagum, the larger desert (c.115,000 sq mi/297,900 sq km), is W of the Amu Darya River and includes most of Turkmenistan. The Murghab and Tejen rivers flow out of the Hindu Kush Mts.

The region has very little precipitation and is sparsely populated, except in the irrigated oases along the Amu Darya and Syr Darya, where cotton, fruit, and rice are grown. Part of the region is used for sheep grazing.
Turan
a city and the administrative center of Pii-Khem Raion, Tuva ASSR. Turan is located in the Turan-Uiuk Basin on the Turan River, a left tributary of the Uiuk, which flows into the BiiKhem, or Bol’shoi Enisei. Situated on the Us Route, which runs between Kyzyl and Abakan, the city is 70 km northwest of Kyzyl and 367 km from the Abakan railroad station. Turan has an industrial combine and a state forestry establishment, as well as a people’s amateur theater.
