vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser
vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser[¦vərd·i·kəl ‚kav·əd·ē ¦sər·fəs i‚mid·iŋ ′lā·zər] (optics) A very small semiconductor laser in which stacks of dielectric mirrors above and below the optically active region form the optical cavity, the active gain medium consists of one or more semiconductor quantum wells placed parallel to the mirrors at an antinode of the cavity resonance, and lasing light emission is from the surface of the semiconductor substrate, normal to the plane of the gain medium. Abbreviated VCSEL. |
