Vladimirov, Igor

Born Jan. 1, 1919, in Ekaterinoslav (present-day Dnepropetrovsk). Soviet Russian actor and stage director. People’s Artist of the USSR (1978).

In 1948, after graduating from the Leningrad A. N. Ostrovskii Theatrical Institute, Vladimirov began appearing in several theaters of Leningrad: the Leningrad Oblast Drama Theater, the Lenin Komsomol Theater, and the Gorky Bolshoi Drama Theater (1956–60). He has been principal stage director of the Leningrad Lensovet Theater since 1960.

Vladimirov’s roles have included Aleksandr Ul’ianov in Popov’s The Family and Lopukhov in The New People, after Chernyshevskii. He has staged Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (1964), Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera (1966), Dvoretskii’s Man From Outside (1971) and Kovaleva From the Provinces (1973), and Borovik’s Interview in Buenos Aires (1976). Vladimirov teaches at the Leningrad Institute of Theater, Music, and Cinematography. In 1974 the final-year students of his course formed the Youth Theater, which became an affiliate of the Lensovet Theater. Vladimirov has also appeared in motion pictures, including Your Contemporary.

Vladimirov has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1979).
