Vladimir Pashuto

Pashuto, Vladimir Terent’evich

Born Apr. 19, 1918, in Leningrad. Soviet historian. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976). Member of the CPSU since 1947.

Pashuto graduated from the history department of Leningrad State University in 1941 and became a professor at the N. K. Krupskaia Moscow Oblast Pedagogical Institute in 1970. In 1948 he joined the staff of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He remained with the Institute of History of the USSR when it was formed in 1969 from the Institute of History. Pashuto became head of the section of the history of ancient states on the territory of the USSR in 1969; in 1977 he was also named head of the department of history of precapitalist formations. His principal works deal with the history of the territory of the USSR in the feudal period, the study of sources, and historiography.

Pashuto has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and various medals.
