overlapping genes
overlapping genes[¦ō·vər‚lap·iŋ ′jēnz] (genetics) Genes having nucleotide sequences that may overlap in a way that involves control genes or structural genes. overlapping genes
overlapping genes two or more GENES in which the NUCLEOTIDE SEQUENCE of part or all of one gene overlaps with that of the next gene. It may be that the genes are translated (see TRANSLATION in different reading frames (see OPEN READING FRAME), or in the same reading frame but using different initiation and termination signals for translation. In these ways the coding capacity of the genetic material can be maximized, giving more than one gene product. |
