[Latin : rigor, stiffness + mortis, genitive of mors, death.]rigor mortis (ˈrɪɡə ˈmɔːtɪs) n (Pathology) pathol the stiffness of joints and muscular rigidity of a dead body, caused by depletion of ATP in the tissues. It begins two to four hours after death and lasts up to about four days, after which the muscles and joints relax[C19: Latin, literally: rigidity of death]rig•or mor•tis (ˈrɪg ər ˈmɔr tɪs; esp. It occurs because the energy needed to interrupt the contraction of muscle fibers is no longer being produced.ThesaurusNoun | 1. | rigor mortis - temporary stiffness of joints and muscular rigidity occurring after deathphysical condition, physiological condition, physiological state - the condition or state of the body or bodily functions | | 2. | rigor mortis - muscular stiffening that begins 2 to 4 hours after death and lasts for about 4 daysrigidification, rigidifying, stiffening - the process of becoming stiff or rigid | Translations
rigor mortis
rigor mortis (rĭ`gər môr`tĭs), rigidity of the body that occurs after death. The onset may vary from about 10 min to several hours or more after death, depending on the condition of the body at death and on factors in the atmosphere, particularly temperature. Rigor mortis affects the facial musculature first and then spreads to other parts of the body. It is caused by chemical changes in the muscle tissue. The state of rigor usually lasts about 24 hours or until muscle decomposition takes place by acid formation.rigor mortis[′rig·ər ′mȯrd·əs] (pathology) Stiffening and rigidity of the musculature occurring after death, beginning within 5-10 hours, and disappearing after 3-4 days. rigor mortis Pathol the stiffness of joints and muscular rigidity of a dead body, caused by depletion of ATP in the tissues. It begins two to four hours after death and lasts up to about four days, after which the muscles and joints relax rigor mortis

Cf Livor mortis. rig·or mor·tis (rī'gōr mōr'tis) Stiffening of the body, from 1-7 hours after death, from hardening of the muscular tissues in consequence of the coagulation of the myosinogen and paramyosinogen; it disappears after 1-6 days, or when decomposition begins. Synonym(s): postmortem rigidity. rigor mortis The stiffening of muscles which occurs after death as a result of the loss of ATP so that the cross bridges cannot disconnect from actin. Rigor usually starts about 3 or 4 hours after death and is usually complete in about 12 hours. It may start much earlier, sometimes almost immediately, if the subject was engaged in strenuous activity or was fevered or suffering convulsions before death. It passes off as enzymes break down and soften the muscles over the course of the next 2 or 3 days.rigor mortis the temporary stiffening of a body after death.rig·or mor·tis (rig'ŏr mōr'tis) Stiffening of the body, from 1-7 hours after death, due to hardening of the muscular tissues in consequence of the coagulation of the myosinogen and paramyosinogen.
