Tempel's comets Tempel's comets (tem -pĕl) Two of the comets discovered by Ernst W. L. Tempel were named Tempel 1 (1879 III) and Tempel 2 (1957 II). The first disappeared after 1879 but reappeared in 1967. His most famous comet, 1866 I, named Tempel-Tuttle, has a period of 33.176 years and an orbit that is practically identical to that of the Leonid meteor stream. See Champollion. |
