Uspekhi Fizicheskikh Nauk

(Advances in Physical Sciences), a monthly scientific journal of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; three volumes, each consisting of four issues, are printed every year. Uspekhi fizicheskikh nauk was founded in 1918 and is published in Moscow. Professor E. V. Shpol’skii, who was the editor in chief from 1936 to 1975, helped found the journal, which is intended for researchers, graduate and undergraduate students of physics, and physics teachers.

Uspekhi fizicheskikh nauk features mainly review articles on current problems in modern physics and allied sciences. It also contains several sections devoted to achievements in various areas of physics and in applications of physics, special problems in physics, fundamental aspects of the teaching of physics at higher educational institutions, and the history of physics. In addition, the journal presents biographies of prominent physicists, descriptions of new devices and methods of measurement, information about scientific sessions of the Division of General Physics and Astronomy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and the proceedings of all-Union and international physics conferences. It also carries lists of new physics books published in the USSR and extended reviews of many special Soviet and foreign publications.

Since 1958, Uspekhi fizicheskikh nauk has been published in English translation in the USA. Circulation, about 5,000 (1976).
