Volyntsevo Settlement and Burial Ground

Volyntsevo Settlement and Burial Ground

Slavic monuments of the eighth century, apparently of the Severiane tribe. They are located in the village of Volyntsevo, Putivl’ Raion, Sumy Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. D. T. Berezovets discovered and studied them from 1948 to 1966. At the site 34 semidugout dwellings and work areas were discovered. The burial site (19 interments) had no burial mounds: corpses were cremated and later buried in urns. Among the artifacts were bindings of a scabbard for sword or saber, fragments of chain mail, bronze bracelets, an iron ring, and glass and paste beads.
