Polba
Polba
the Russian name for species of wheat having a fragile spike and a grain with a chaff. When the spike is ripe, it breaks up into spikelets with segments of an axis. The grain does not thresh free from its chaff. Wild species include Triticum dicoc-coides, T. boeticum, T. thaoudar, and T. urarthu. Among the cultivated species are T. dicoccum (the most common species), T. spelta, T. macha, and T. timofeevi. The wheats are hardy and early-ripening. Most species are resistant to fungal infections. The wheats occupy only a small area of the cultivated land in the world. They are important bases for wheat selection.
