Any of a group of cephalosporin antibiotics capable of killing aerobic gram-negative rods. They are used to treat pneumonia and meningitis. Some agents, i.e., ceftazidime and cefoperazone, are very effective against against Pseudomonas aeruginosa Examples of third-generation cephalosporins are cefsulodin, cefotaxime, ceftizoxime, ceftriaxone, cefoperazone, moxalactam, and ceftazidime.
