OVGP1

A gene on chromosome 1p13 that encodes a large, carbohydrate-rich, epithelial glycoprotein with numerous O-glycosylation sites. OVGP1 is similar to members of the mucin and the glycosyl hydrolase 18 gene families. Gene expression occurs during late follicular development through early cleavage-stage embryonic development, and may be oestrogen dependent. The protein is secreted by non-ciliated oviductal epithelial cells, associates with ovulated oocytes, blastomeres and spermatozoan acrosomal regions, and is thought to play a role in fertilisation and/or early embryonic development.
