Queen of Poisons

The ancient Greeks’ term for aconite—also known as wolfsbane, leopard's bane, women's bane, Devil's helmet, blue rocket—which contains a highly toxic alkaloid, aconitine. While aconite had currency as a herbal antipyretic and analgesic, its narrow therapeutic index makes dose titration a risky exercise. As a neurotoxin, it opens TTX-sensitive Na+ channels in the heart and other tissues and causes cardiac arrhythmias
