Ton that Tung

 

Born Feb. 15, 1912, in Hué. Vietnamese surgeon. Hero of Socialist Labor of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (1962).

Ton That Tung graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Hanoi in 1939. In 1954 he became head of the department of hospital surgery in Hanoi’s medical institute; at the same time he served as deputy minister of public health and chief surgeon of the People’s Army of Vietnam. From 1946 to 1962 he was secretary-general of the Red Cross Society of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Ton That Tung’s chief published works deal with tropical surgery and the surgical treatment of diseases of the liver and pancreas. Ton That Tung is a foreign member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1965) and a corresponding member of the Surgeon’s Association of the German Democratic Republic (1963) and of the Surgical Association of France (1964).
