Nine pocket books of Voices From Russia were published. Their appearance was connected with the upsurge in the social movement in Russia after the Crimean War of 1853–56. The articles advocated the liquidation of serfdom, the freedom of the individual, and a weakening of the censorship. They exposed the embezzlement of state property, bribery, and the arbitrariness of the bureaucracy and the officer corps.
