Scythian Platform

Scythian Platform

a cratonic region with a Baikal or partly Hercynian basement covered with a thick sedimentary mantle. The topography of the Scythian Platform is dominated by plains, such as the Northern Caucasus and the steppe Crimea, The basement consists of a shaly limestone mass formed into folds. The mantle is composed of Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Paleogene marine sediments (sandstones and sands, limestones, marls, clays) and marine, estuarine-marine, and continental Neogene and Anthropogenic deposits. The platform is bounded on the north by the southern edge of the East European Platform and in the south by the fold structures of the mountain Crimea, the Kerch’ Peninsula, and the Northern Caucasus.
