Sirventes

Sirventes

a genre of medieval romance literature, a poem in stanzas with a borrowed melody. Originally, during the 12th and 13th centuries, the sirventes was counterposed in Provençal literature to the love lyric as a lyric of political, didactic, or martial content. From the 14th to 16th centuries in Provence and France, the sirventes was a religious lyric. In Italy during the 13th and 14th centuries, the sirventes retained all the characteristics of a political lyric.
