Polichinelle

 

a character in the French popular theater. A mocking and comical hunchback, the figure of Polichinelle first appeared in the late 16th century in performances given at fairs and is related to the stock type Pulcinella from the Italian commedia dell’arte. In the 17th century, Molière made use of the type in his comedy The Imaginary Invalid. Polichinelle was popular with the public and became one of the favorite heroes of the puppet theater. The expression “Polichinelle’s secret” refers to something that everyone knows.
