Polikanov, Sergei Mikhailovich

Born Sept. 14, 1926, in Moscow. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1974). Member of the CPSU since 1955.

Upon graduating from the Moscow Physical Engineering Institute in 1950, Polikanov worked at the Institute of Atomic Energy. In 1957 he began working at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna.

Polikanov’s major work has been in nuclear physics. In conjunction with others, Polikanov discovered the phenomenon of spontaneous fission from an isomeric state, uncovered a series of spontaneously fissionable isomers and investigated the energies of their excited state, and synthesized elements 102 and 103. He has also studied the nuclear and atomic phenomena exhibited during nuclear fission under the action of negative muons.

A recipient of the Lenin Prize (1967), Polikanov has been awarded the Order of Lenin.
