Veian, Andris

(pseudonym; real name, Donat Geronimovich Kalnach). Born Apr. 20, 1927, in the province of Nirza, present-day Ludzen Raion. Latvian Soviet poet. Member of the CPSU since 1966.

Veian graduated from the philology department of Riga Pedagogical Institute in 1950. His work was first published in 1946. He is the author of such collections of verse as Youth (1953), The Sun Rises Higher (1957; State Prize of the Latvian SSR in 1957), Years and Traces (1964), The Eye of the Mountain (1965), and Peace (1968). Veian lovingly depicts the heyday of his native country and exalts friendship among peoples. He translates verses by Russian, Ukrainian, and Lithuanian poets into Latvian. Since 1967 he has been the editor of the journal Karogs (Banner).
