visual descent points visual descent points (VDP)A point on the final approach course of a non-precision straight-in approach procedure from which normal descent from the minimum decision altitude (MDA) to the runway touchdown point may be commenced, provided the visual reference required is established. The VDP normally is identified by a navigational fix. Where a visual approach slope indicator is installed, the VDP is located at the point where the lowest VASI (visual approach slope indicator) glide-slope intersects the lowest MDA. Where a VASI is not installed, the VDP is located at the point on the final approach course at the MDA, normally where a descent gradient of 300 to 400 ft/NM to the threshold begins. The VDP is identified on the profile view of the approach chart by the symbol “V.” |
