Sit, Battle of the

a battle fought on Mar. 4, 1238, on the bank of the Sit’ River, a tributary of the Mologa, by Iurii Vsevolodovich, grand prince of Vladimir, and Burundai, a Mongol temnik (commander of 10,000 men). After invading the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal’, the Mongol-Tatars proceeded from Uglich to the Sit’ River, took the Russian army by surprise, and defeated it. Iurii Vsevolodovich and the princes allied with him were killed during the battle. As a result of the battle of the Sit’, the Mongol-Tatars broke the resistance of the princes of northeastern Rus’.
