A form of low-density lipoprotein that is modified in vivo and thought to play a key role in the development of atherosclerosis, given that its uptake by macrophages and smooth muscle cells leads to formation of foam cells, a critical step in atherosclerosis. Circulating OxLDL concentrations reflect the state of pathological atherosclerosis and are biochemical risk marker for coronary artery disease (CAD). OxLDL can be quantified by measuring malondialdehyde-modified LDL, which more accurately reflect CAD than surrogate markers such as cholesterol, HDL and LDL
