Tool Institute
(full name, the All-Union Scientific Research Tool Institute of the Ministry of the Machine-Tool Industry; VNII), established in 1943 in Moscow.
The institute develops the scientific-technical and theoretical principles of cutting processes; works on the design, production technology, and operation of cutting tools; and conducts research on tool materials. It has independent departments of standardization and normalization, patent licensing, and development of new types and models. It has 13 sectors, including ones for general purpose tools; tooling equipment for transfer lines and assembly and special machine tools; gear-cutting tools; and production-process tools. The institute offers graduate correspondence courses. It publishes the periodical Sbornik trudov (Collected Works; since 1952) and information and operations manuals on tools.
