Sea Blue Histiocyte

A histiocyte with abundant light sea blue/green-staining granular cytoplasm seen when stained with a ‘Romanovsky’ stain—e.g., Wright stain; the colour is due to degradation moieties of complex lipid, seen in lipid storage disease, due to alterations in glycoprotein metabolism or in ageing; these cells often autofluoresce, and are positive with PAS, Sudan black, and Prussian blue stains; sea blue histiocytes are a non-specific finding
