[¦rīz ən ′rən] (civil engineering) The pitch of an inclined surface or member, usually expressed as the ratio of the vertical rise to the horizontal span.

Rise and run

The ratio of vertical to horizontal distance of a slope, such as a roof of 3 in 12; also, the total vertical and horizontal distance of a flight of stairs, or an individual riser and tread.
