A nonspecific term used in primary publications from the 1930s until the 1970s, whose authors variously applied it to hypo- and hyperfunction of the adrenal gland. It has been replaced by the condition-specific terms Addison's disease, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Conn syndrome and Cushing syndrome; adrenocortical syndrome is therefore best regarded as inappropriate for the working medical parlance
