Temriuk Aidarovich

Temriuk Aidarovich

(also Temriuk Idarovich). Died 1570’s. Kabardin prince.

In the mid-16th century, Temriuk Aidarovich was senior prince of Kabarda. He attempted to unite the fragmented Kabardin lands and to organize a struggle against Turkish-Crimean aggression. In 1557, together with other Kabardin princes, he assumed Russian citizenship. In 1561, Tsar Ivan IV Vasil’evich married Temriuk’s daughter Kuchenei (Mariia); this marriage strengthened Temriuk’s position among the Kabardin princes. The Terskii settlement, built in 1567 at Temriuk’s request, became a center of Russian influence throughout the Caucasus.
