Sivtsev, Dmitrii Kononovich

(pen name Suorun Omollon). Born Sept. 1 (14), 1906, in Third Zhekhsogonskii Nasleg (ancestral rural commune), now in Alekseevskii Raion, Yakut ASSR. Soviet Yakut writer. People’s Writer of the Yakut ASSR (1967) and Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR and Yakut ASSR. Member of the CPSU since 1966.

Sivtsev graduated from the Yakut Pedagogical Technicum in 1928; he had begun publishing in 1926. He wrote the short-story collections In the Flowering Greenery (1933) and Stories (1937) and the dramas The Blacksmith Kiukiur (1932; Russian translation, 1960), about the collectivization of the Yakut village, N’iurgun Bootur the Impetuous (1940; Russian translation, 1963), Saisary (1943; 2nd version, 1958), and Before the Dawn (1970). He is also the author of the tragedy A iaal (1940; 2nd version, 1958; Russian translation, 1966). Sivtsev’s work has close ties with folklore. He has published several collections of his own versions of Yakut folktales. He also writes for children. Sivtsev has been awarded two orders and several medals.
