Abgar Ioannisian

Ioannisian, Abgar Rubenovich

 

Born May 30 (June 12), 1908, in Tbilisi. Soviet historian. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1947). Member of the CPSU since 1944.

Ioannisian was prorector of the University of Yerevan from 1938 to 1946, director of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR from 1947 to 1953, academician-secretary of the social sciences division of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR from 1949 to 1960, and vice-president of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR in the years 1960–63 and since 1967. His main works deal with the history of Utopian socialism, the liberation movements of the Armenian people, and the incorporation of Transcaucasia into Russia. He has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and a number of medals.
