Polygnotus the First
Polygnotus the First
an ancient Greek vase painter, evidently named after the painter and sculptor Polygnotus. Polygnotus the First worked in Athens from roughly 450 to 425 B.C. He was one of the great masters of red-figure vase painting of high classicism. His work is distinguished by its simplicity and monumental composition. Polygnotus’ five surviving signed works include an amphora depicting Ajax in a chariot and Achilles placed between Patroclus and the Phoenix.
